Day One:
Monday 23rd April 2007 - Arrival in Istanbul
Welcome to Turkey! You will be greeted with hospitality at the Ataturk International Airport by a Sammy's Travel representative
and driven into the heart of the old city where you can rest and relax for the remainder of the day.
Overnight: Istanbul
Day
Two: Tuesday 24th April - Istanbul to Gallipoli
After breakfast we will take in this amazing city through a fully
guided driving tour of Istanbul where we will see the Blue Mosque,
Topkapi Palace, Hippodrome and Ataturk Stadium ‘home of the famous
2005 Liverpool win’. After the City Tour we drive to the Gallipoli
Peninsula stopping on the way for a lunch break. On the way your
guide will give you some information about the Gallipoli region and
the battles that took place so when you visit the various sites on
Anzac Day you will understand their importance. You will also have
an opportunity to watch “Gallipoli” the movie so you get a feel for
the type of people who fought in this war and to help you picture
conditions 92 years ago. Upon arriving at Gallipoli we will visit
the Kabatepe War Museum and then there will be time for a short
dinner break before we make our way to Anzac Cove to get a good
position.
We arrive at the dawn service around 19:00pm & 20:00pm to get a good
spot on the grass, already, here are several hundred people about.
There are big screens and music to entertain you and to thank you,
the people who have made the pilgrimage to Gallipoli for ANZAC Day.
War veterans, military personal and media are everywhere and the
atmosphere is electric. There is a unique feeling in the air, a
celebration of peace subdued by a cloud of commemoration. Within 3
hours, the site will appear like a sea of colour with thousands of
Aussies and Kiwis sprawling out on the grass, warmly wrapped up
sleeping bags, National flags and rugby tops. Get a few hours
rest/sleep on the grass because by 9pm the MC will be asking you to
squash forward to try and make space for the thousands more people
still to come. The buzzing atmosphere will permeate the whole night.
Well before the grey light of dawn signals the start of the dawn
service, speakers and entertainers begian their addresses, folk
songs and stories. The local Turks also sell a great variety of
Turkish Kebabs, pancakes and fast hot foods.
Overnight: Anzac Cove
Meals: Breakfast
Day Three:
Wednesday 25th April - ANZAC Day
At first light you will experience the Dawn Service, a truly moving
experience for everyone. You will hear tributes and tales of your
fellow countrymen and join the many thousand who make the pilgrimage
to Gallipoli to remember the fallen. After the Dawn Service you will
make your way to the various sites for the different commemorations.
First is the Australian Service at Lone Pine and then the New
Zealand service at Chunuk Bair. After the New Zealand service we
will board the bus and you have the option of either being dropped
